A 23-year-old man was fatally injured in a traffic collision on the Costa Mesa Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

James Legregs of Orange was thrown from a car he was riding in after it collided with another vehicle, said CHP Officer Ricardo Lozano.

Andrea Talbot, 22, of Laguna Niguel was driving from the Garden Grove Freeway to the southbound lanes of the Costa Mesa Freeway about 9:55 p.m. Tuesday when she apparently lost control of her car just south of Fairhaven Avenue and swerved into a car driven by Richard Schaefer, 22, of Orange.

Schaefer’s car overturned, ejecting him and his three passengers, including Legregs, Lozano said.

Talbot’s car then hit a second car before coming to a stop, Lozano said.

Legregs was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died about 10:55 p.m., according to the Orange County coroner’s office.

Schaefer and two of his other passengers--Kevin Meadow, 21, of Orange and Michael Navarro, 22, of Rowland Heights--were taken to local hospitals and were in good condition with minor injuries, nursing supervisors said.

Talbot and the second driver she collided with, Michael Peterson, 22, of Irvine, were not injured, the CHP reported.

The CHP has not cited anyone involved in the collision, pending the outcome of an investigation.
