ENCINO : Groups to Clean Up Part of L.A. River

The Sierra Club and other environmental groups have scheduled a cleanup--and a picnic two weeks later--along a stretch of the Los Angeles River targeted for beautification by a city task force.
As many as 100 volunteers are expected to work April 11 to clear shopping carts and debris from a portion of the river in the Sepulveda Basin near Balboa Park, according to Sierra Club official Denis Schure.
The picnic and a canoeing demonstration, under “strictly controlled” conditions for safety, will be held April 26, he said.
Schure serves on the Los Angeles River Task Force appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley, which last month announced three demonstration projects designed to turn the 50-mile concrete waterway into a recreational, cultural and--in places--scenic facility.
The project in the Sepulveda Basin is designed to create a more natural setting, including a quarter-mile hiking trail and to “get people to establish the linkage between the storm drain and the river . . . to not trash it,” Schure said.
