VAN NUYS : Shelter Opens Door to the Homeless

The city of Los Angeles opened a 150-bed shelter in Van Nuys Thursday night to help homeless people escape the wet weather.

The shelter at the old National Guard Armory in the 17300 block of Victory Blvd. opened at 6 p.m. and was scheduled to close at 6 a.m. today.

City-sponsored shuttle vans were making stops at four Valley sites between 5 and 8:30 p.m. to pick up people in need of shelter.

The sites are: Van Nuys City Hall, 14410 Sylvan St.; Valley Community Clinic, 5648 Vineland Ave., North Hollywood; El Central de Amistad, 7024 Deering Ave., Canoga Park, and the Hansen Dam Recreation Center parking lot, Foothill Boulevard and Osborne Street, Lake View Terrace.
