Aztec Men’s Tennis Team Routs NE Louisiana

The 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s tennis team defeated Northeast Louisiana, 5-1, Thursday in the first round of the UC Irvine Tennis Classic. The Aztecs’ Joe McDonough, ranked 83rd in the ITCA rankings, defeated Jesper Fjelstadt, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Michael Sass defeated Arlin Sternberg, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Northeast Louisiana fell to 11-7. Other singles winners for the Aztecs were Chris Numbers, Jeff Belloli and Steve Saba. SDSU (11-2) plays Alabama Birmingham (8-0) today at 1.

SOFTBALL

Robin Rabello drove in three runs in the first game and another in the second to lift Point Loma Nazarene (8-6, 2-4) to a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Christ College Irvine, 5-3 and 3-0.

Rabello (5-3), the winning pitcher in the first game, had a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs. She added a run-scoring double in the first inning of the second game and had a three-run triple in the fifth inning wiped out because the game was called because of rain.

Erin Gaut (3-2) was the winning pitcher in the second, breaking a personal two-game losing streak. She finished with a one-hitter.

BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene’s home game against Claremont, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed because of rain until April 20 at 3 p.m.

UC San Diego led Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-0, in the fifth inning before rain suspended the first-round game at UCSD’s Invitational. UCSD’s Triton Field is unplayable, so the tournament will be moved to Imperial Valley Junior College in El Centro. The Tritons will attempt to resume their game against Wisconsin-Whitewater at 9 a.m. At 3, UCSD will play Cal Lutheran, which beat Central Washington on Thursday, 15-1.
