NHL ROUNDUP : Devils’ Victory Clinches Playoff Spot

Goaltender Martin Brodeur, called up from junior hockey on an emergency basis, stopped 24 shots in his NHL debut and the New Jersey Devils clinched a playoff berth with a 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins Thursday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Randy McKay scored a goal and set up Claude Lemieux’s 40th of the season to support the 19-year-old Brodeur. Claude Vilgrain had assists on the first two New Jersey goals.

Pittsburgh 7, Vancouver 3--Rick Tocchet and Mario Lemieux each scored two goals and had four assists in the Penguins’ victory at Pittsburgh.

Lemieux, who recorded his 600th NHL assist, had his second six-point game of the season.

N.Y. Islanders 7, San Jose 4--Derek King’s goal 35 seconds into the second period triggered a three-goal outburst that carried the Islanders to victory at Uniondale, N.Y.

St. Louis 7, Hartford 2--Ron Wilson and Brendan Shanahan each had two goals and an assist at St. Louis as the Blues continued their domination of Adams Division teams.

Chicago 5, Quebec 4--Michel Goulet scored a power-play goal with 35 seconds to play in overtime, lifting the Blackhawks to victory at Quebec.
