COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garces’ Double Leads Titans Past Florida State in Softball

Rose Garces doubled to drive in two runs in the fifth inning and Cal State Fullerton went on to defeat Florida State, 5-4, in pool play of the PONY softball tournament at Fullerton.

Garces’ double keyed a four-run inning for the Titans (20-11), ranked ninth nationally.

Fullerton’s Tiffany Boyd (13-5) relieved starter Cheryl Longeway in the fourth inning and got the victory.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 6, Whittier 1--Janet Evans was three for four with two runs batted in and scored a run for visiting SCC (12-4). Shannon Saylor (8-2) got the victory for the Vanguards.

In nonconference baseball:

California 10, Chapman 7--Visiting Cal built a 10-2 lead after six innings and then held off Chapman. Larry Stahlhoefer had a two-run homer in the first and Chris Briones was two for four with an RBI for Chapman (21-10).

Cal scored six runs in the sixth and chased Chapman ace Pete Coleman. Coleman (3-2) got two outs and allowed two runs in the inning before being replaced. The next two Chapman pitchers, Steve Aviles and Corey Giuliano, weren’t able to get an out and each was charged with two runs.

Christ College Irvine 2, Western Baptist 0--Trevor Earl and Greg Angeloni combined for a shutout as the Eagles improved their record to 17-7 with the home victory. Jim Vlcek tripled in a run in the third inning and Rod Nelson drove in a run with a single in the fourth for CCI.

The Master’s 7, Southern California College 1--Greg Ertel hit the game’s only home run, a solo shot, in the fourth inning for SCC (11-12-1, 5-4). Pitcher Mike Smith had 11 strikeouts and one walk for The Master’s (9-14).

At the UC Irvine-Marriott Tennis Classic:

UC Irvine 9, Nebraska 0--Brett Hansen-Dent, ranked 30th in the nation, won at No. 1 singles for the Anteaters (6-6) in the first round. The Anteaters face Colorado in the second round at 9 a.m. today at the UCI Tennis Stadium.

In the UC Santa Barbara golf tournament:

UC Irvine in Second--After 36 holes of the tournament, the Anteaters have 574 strokes, trailing only Fresno State with 573 at the Sandpiper Golf Course. William Yanagisawa shot rounds of 69 and 68 to take the lead at 137 for the Anteaters. Per Nyman of Fresno State is two strokes back at 139. Joey Sugar shot 141 and Lyle Archer shot 145 for the Anteaters.
