SDSU Reserve Quarterbacks Impress Luginbill
For the second consecutive week, San Diego State football Coach Al Luginbill was impressed with reserve quarterbacks Tim Gutierrez and Brian Kalk.
And Friday, for the first time this spring, the Aztecs staged a full-length scrimmage. Last Friday’s was cut short by rain.
“Their pocket awareness is much further along than expected,” Luginbill said of the quarterbacks after a 110-play scrimmage. “I like their ability to step around the rush and step up and throw the ball and keep their concentration.”
Gutierrez completed 12 of 17 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Two passes were intercepted. Kalk completed 11 of 24 for 103 yards. One pass was intercepted.
Robert Griffith, John Louis, Gary Taylor and Eric Sutton intercepted a pass.
Ray Peterson had four catches for 52 yards and a 37-yard punt return, and Marlon Manassa had 43 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries. “They’re going to have an impact on this program,” Luginbill said.
The Aztecs were without offensive tackle Tony Nichols (shoulder separation), running back Marshall Faulk (flu) and offensive lineman Carlson Leomiti (weight problems). Nichols will be examined again on Monday, and Leomiti is doubtful for next week.
Louis suffered a sprained ankle and is questionable for next week.
