Sierra Madre : More Asbestos at Library
An unexpected additional layer of material containing asbestos was found in samples taken from the Sierra Madre Public Library’s acoustical ceilings, City Librarian Toni Buckner told the City Council last week.
Asbestos removal crews have been scheduled to work an extra day to scrape the ceiling down to the first layer and then wire-brush the entire surface. As a result, volunteers who had been asked to help re-shelve the library’s 40,000 decontaminated books Monday should come at 10 a.m. Tuesday instead.
The official reopening date of April 13 has not changed, Buckner said. The library has been closed since Feb. 25, when roof work knocked asbestos loose.
