Business of Seizing Money Questioned
I recently saw in the news that the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be adding state-of-the-art video cameras to some of its patrol cars (“Deputies to Roll With Video Cameras,” March 18). The best part is it won’t cost the taxpayer a cent because it is paid for by money seized in drug arrests.
My question is, why does the Sheriff’s Department get the use of this seized money? Is it fair that just because schools aren’t in the business of seizing money they cannot benefit from these unanticipated funds? Perhaps the schools should go into the law enforcement business to get a new angle on revenue. I would like to see some of this wealth spread out a little bit.
