‘White Men’ Leaps to No. 1
“White Men Can’t Jump” may be the film’s title, but it had no problem jumping into first place at the nation’s theaters over the weekend.
The urban comedy, featuring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, scored a big $14.5 million in three days on 1,922 screens, according to industry sources. That was enough to push the controversial sexual thriller “Basic Instinct” into second place, with $13.3 million for the weekend.
“Instinct,” however, dropped only slightly from its opening weekend, when it generated about $15.1 million. In its first 10 days, the TriStar Pictures release has grossed about $34.8 million.
In third place was Paramount Pictures’ “Wayne’s World,” with about $5.7 million in receipts. Its total gross in the seven weeks since it was released is nearly $90 million.
