Five local sports figures have been selected for induction into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.

The five will be honored May 30 at the organization’s 10th annual induction ceremony and banquet at the Radisson Suites Hotel in Oxnard.

The Hall of Fame has inducted 46 athletes and sports figures, all of them men. The hall, organized 10 years ago by sports enthusiasts, is seeking a permanent location.

Three women have been nominated, but they are all still competing and don’t meet the group’s age eligibility requirement (40 or older for athletes who are still competing).

This year’s inductees:

* Dave Marquez of Santa Paula gained some fame during the early days of drag racing in the 1950s. Marquez, 60, was also involved in the development of fuels used in high-powered racing. He retired from the drag racing circuit in 1957 with more than 20 national or track records. Later he turned to off-road racing and auto customizing.

* Robert Shoup of Thousand Oaks is a former award-winning football coach for Cal Lutheran University. When he retired from coaching in 1989, he had 186 wins, the most among California college football coaches. Shoup, 60, was instrumental in bringing the Dallas Cowboys to Cal Lutheran to train, and several of his players went on to professional football.

* Mike Michel of Ventura was a star football player at Ventura College and later Stanford University, where he made some record-setting field goals. Michel, 37, went on to play for the Miami Dolphins. A leg injury in 1978 led to a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles and later the Washington Redskins. He is now a real estate broker.

* Marvin Hodges of Oak View has had a 35-year career as a sports official. He worked with the local Channel Coast Officials Assn. and the California Interscholastic Federation, officiating football, basketball and baseball. In 1981, he was inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame in Kansas. Hodges, 75, is a bus driver in the Head Start program.

* Walter Musial, a longtime Ventura coach, will be inducted posthumously. He retired in 1979 and died in 1986 at the age of 69. At Ventura College, he coached several sports before coming to Ventura High School in 1953 to be head of the physical education department.

These students will be selected by their schools’ athletic and academic departments and will be competing for athlete of the year awards.
