COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Puts End to Skid With Victory Over USC

Junior James Thomas pitched a four-hitter as Chapman defeated USC, 2-0, in a nonconfernece baseball game Sunday at USC.

Thomas (5-2) had eight strikeouts and the right-hander didn’t walk a batter. The victory stopped Chapman’s losing streak at three games.

Chapman (22-11) scored single runs in the fourth and ninth. Larry Stahlhoefer had an RBI single that scored Cliff Anderson in the fourth inning. Anderson had reached second on an error.

Chapman scored another run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Rob Reimers.

Kent Donnelly (4-4) allowed five hits and an unearned run in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss for USC (17-15).

In the Big West Conference:

Pacific 3, Cal State Fullerton 2--For the second consecutive Sunday, Fullerton missed a chance to sweep a series against one of the weaker teams in the conference.

Pacific (11-19, 2-10 in conference) rallied for three runs in the seventh. The first run came on a sacrifice fly and the next two on a home run by Doug Bame, putting the Tigers ahead, 3-2. Bame’s game-winning home run came on the first pitch thrown by Fullerton reliever Paco Chavez.

Fullerton, which was upset by New Mexico State last Sunday, had a chance to tie the score in the ninth.

Tony Banks reached first on an error to start the inning, and was sacrificed to second by Jason Moler. But Craig Fairbrother flied out to left and pinch-hitter Brett Hemphill flied out to right to end the game.

Fullerton (22-9, 6-3) had scored twice in the fourth. Phil Nevin started the rally with a single, then went to third on a double by Banks. Moler had an RBI groundout and Jim Betzsold added an RBI single.

Nevin’s single extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Fresno State 10, UC Irvine 3--Gary McNamara had three hits Sunday, giving him eight in a row in three games for host Fresno State (22-11, 5-1). Todd Johnson added his sixth home run for Fresno State, which swept the series.

Fresno State led, 6-0, after three innings. UC Irvine got one in the third and two in the sixth to narrow the lead to 7-3, but the Bulldogs got two more in the sixth.

Jon Damush had four hits and scored two runs and Ray Walker had two hits and two RBIs for UC Irvine (14-12, 4-5).

In the Marriott/UC Irvine men’s tennis tournament:

San Diego State 5, UC Irvine 1--San Diego State took fifth place with the victory. Brett Hansen-Dent won, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for Irvine’s only point.

Alabama Birmingham defeated Washington, 5-1, to win the tournament title.
