Share

The financially strapped Montebello Unified School District approved more than $9 million in budget cuts amid a day of protests that erupted in violence, property damage and looting.

The cuts included the elimination of some teachers, school nurses, psychologists, counselors, librarians, assistant principals and custodians and the gifted student program. Saved were the extended day or extracurricular activities, which include competitive sports, band, industrial arts, art, and home economics.

Earlier in the day, walkouts by 1,500 student protesters from the Montebello and Bell Gardens high schools erupted in fights outside district offices and some looting of area businesses. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.
