ROUNDUP : Newbury Park Rallies in 7th to Take Over 1st in Marmonte

Share

Rain nearly handed Newbury Park High a victory in its Marmonte League baseball game on Wednesday. A few minutes later, the Panthers almost drowned.

After blowing an early lead, Newbury Park rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, 6-5, at home.

Coupled with Simi Valley’s loss, the victory moved the Panthers into sole possession of first place in the league.

Newbury Park (6-3, 3-0 in league play) led, 3-2, in the top of the sixth when rain forced a delay.

“Since we had played enough innings (for it to be ruled an official game), I think our guys thought we had it won,” Newbury Park Coach Gary Fabricius said. “When we started again, Camarillo looked ready to play and we weren’t.”

Camarillo (4-5, 0-3 in league play) scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to forge a 5-3 lead.

Robert Fick walked to open the seventh for Newbury Park and Jason Buckley moved Fick to third with a one-out double. Rich Adams followed with a grounder to pitcher Chris Gregg, who tried to nail Fick as he danced off third. The throw was late and the bases were loaded.

A sacrifice fly by Jason Tubb brought Newbury Park to within 5-4 and Mike Marsden walked to reload the bases. Pinch-hitter Daniel Kadofono drew another walk to force in a run and tie the score.

Junior shortstop David Lamb won it with a base hit to left on an 0-and-2 pitch.

Keith Smith, Lamb and Buckley each had two hits for Newbury Park.

Junior right-hander Tim Farris (4-0) went the distance for the Panthers, allowing five hits and surviving three errors by his teammates.

Thousand Oaks scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth. The winning run came when junior outfielder Jason Bazo led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a squeeze bunt by Olin.

Mission right-hander Frank Serna surrendered a base hit and a walk to open the 12th, however, and the defending conference champion Seahawks took advantage.

After a ground ball put Harbor runners at first and third with one out, the baserunner at first broke for second. Mission catcher Lazaro Campos’ throw to second was deflected into the outfield and both runners scored on the error to tie the score.

Serna allowed one earned run in 7 1/3 innings of relief.
