For the second consecutive year, teams in the National Football League have found the Chargers’ roster to their liking.

The Chargers lost 11 players to Plan B free agency this year, including starting safety Martin Bayless and starting cornerback Sam Seale. The team also lost 11 players last year, and former Coach Dan Henning said later that the large number of departing players had an adverse effect on the Chargers’ special teams play.

“We gave San Diego the chance today to see if they were willing to match Kansas City’s offer, but Bobby Beathard said it would be better for me to go on and start a career somewhere else,” said Bayless, who started 63 games for the Chargers in the past five yars. “Kansas City has given me an opportunity to play; I don’t think I would have had that opportunity here.”

Bayless waited until Wednesday’s Plan B signing deadline to decide between contract offers from Kansas City and Atlanta. Seale rejected an offer from the Rams, and decided to join the Raiders, the team that released him in 1988.

“I’m happy, very happy,” he said. “I’m going somewhere where I have a chance to win.”

While Bayless and Seale said their goodbys, the team issued a welcome to several last-minute Plan B signees, bringing to 10 the number of unprotected players that will be joining the Chargers this season. Last season the Chargers signed eight Plan B players--four of whom who still remain with the team.

The Chargers said Erik Affholter, a former wide receiver for USC, opted to leave Green Bay and play in San Diego along with Tampa Bay linebacker Sam Anno, who will get a long look as the team’s deep snapper.

Affholter, a fourth-round pick of the Packers in 1989, has spent much of the past three seasons on injured reserve. He caught seven passes for 68 yards in the Packers’ final four games last year.

Anno led the Bucs on special teams in tackles, while playing in 16 games as their deep snapper. The Chargers lost deep snappers Mark Rodenhauser (Chicago) and Randy Kirk (Cincinnati).
