Texas Instruments Inc. said Monday that it will close its Tennessee manufacturing plant by the end of the year and consolidate it with its Texas operations. The plant has 700 workers.

About 35 of the Johnson City workers will be asked to relocate to Texas facilities in Austin, Lubbock and Temple.

“By consolidating operations, we can reduce operating costs and increase efficiencies, thus increasing our competitiveness in this business,” Plant Manager Jerry Brock said.

In October, electronics giant Siemens AG bought Texas Instruments’ industrial automation plant here. Texas Instruments’ custom manufacturing operation had been leasing space in the plant from Siemens since the acquisition.

Texas Instruments entered the custom manufacturing services business 10 years ago. It supplies design services and advanced manufacturing for TI’s components and systems customers.

Texas Instruments employees will receive separation benefits, and the company will establish an outplacement center to help employees find jobs, Brock said.

Dallas-based Texas Instruments develops, manufactures and markets semiconductors, defense electronics systems and consumer electronics products.
