BASEBALL: DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Injured Toe Might Sideline Finley

Share

Left-hander Chuck Finley, who suffered another injury to his surgically repaired left big toe in a fall Sunday, is questionable for his first start of the season. Finley is scheduled to face the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday at Anaheim Stadium, but soreness in the toe might prevent that.

“He’s either going to throw (today) or Wednesday, and that will determine if we skip him,” Manager Buck Rodgers said. “If we skip him, we’re going to have to scuffle a little bit. It’ll be undecided until we see how the first two or three games go and how we use our pitchers. Then, it could be Scott Lewis, Scott Bailes or Chuck Crim.

Trainer Ned Bergert said that the toe is hyperextended.

Mike Fitzgerald, who made the team as a nonroster player, signed a one-year, $350,000 major league contract. . . . Rene Gonzales, assigned to the Angels’ minor league camp Sunday, hasn’t decided whether to report. He will meet today with Angel Senior Vice President Dan O’Brien.
