SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : Plan Would Alter Ethnic Ratios

Five San Fernando Valley schools and magnet programs may enroll more minority students this fall under a plan being considered by Los Angeles Unified School District officials to revise ethnic ratios on those campuses.

A report submitted to the school board Monday recommends that minority students be allowed to comprise up to 70% of the student population at William Howard Taft High School, the gifted and high-ability magnet programs at John Burroughs and Sepulveda junior high schools, and the computer math and science, and the television, theater and fine arts magnets at Pacoima Junior High School.

Currently, minority enrollment on these campuses cannot exceed 60%. More than 100 of the district’s 625 schools now have a 70% limit, six years after such targets were set to expedite integration efforts in the district, which boasts about 87% minority students on the whole.

The board is scheduled to vote April 20 on the plan, which was submitted after officials canvassed school, community and parental opinions.

Henry Chu
