Polar Bear Orphans Need a Zoo Home
It isn’t easy finding a home for two whipped cream-eating polar bear cubs orphaned last month when a hunter shot their mother.
“Right now they’re at the lovable stage,” said Bruce Batten, spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “But the older they get, the bigger they get and the more difficult it gets to place them and transport them.”
“They’re growing like weeds and eating whipped cream like it’s going out of style,” Alaska Zoo director Sammye Seawell said. The cubs are fed cream and a special cub formula.
The 4-month-old male and female were orphaned when a hunter said he mistakenly shot their mother in northwest Alaska.
The Alaska Zoo polar bear exhibit is full, so officials are trying to find a zoo in the Lower 48 states that will take them.
