A man was shot to death by one of two masked robbers who entered his Park La Brea area home while he and his family where having a barbecue, a detective said Thursday.

Arthur Takavorian, 46, was shot once in the chest and died at his home in the 7900 block of Blackburn Avenue, said Detective Dan Andrews.

Takavorian, his brother and sister-in-law were in the kitchen sitting down to eat after cooking on the patio at 8:30 p.m. Thursday when two men wearing stocking masks entered through the kitchen door, Andrews said.

“One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and Takavorian’s sister-in-law began to scream,” Andrews said, adding that she was pistol-whipped on her head.

The suspects ordered her to “shut up,” and then, Andrews said, the gunman turned toward Takavorian and shot him once in the chest. The suspects apparently made no verbal demands, because everything happened so quickly, the detective said.
