GARDEN GROVE : Initiative on Schools Opposed by Trustees
Citing the potential for discrimination against low-income families, the Garden Grove Unified School District has formally opposed the Parental Choice Ballot Initiative.
In a resolution passed unanimously on Tuesday, the Board of Trustees stated that the initiative would cost public schools as much as $1.5 billion statewide by offering $2,500 scholarships to families for each child who attends a private school. Because average private school tuitions run about $7,000 a year, the initiative would subsidize the wealthy and discriminate against the poor, the board said.
The resolution also said that because private schools are not bound by anti-discrimination laws that govern public schools, they could refuse admittance to students based on religion, disability, gender and other factors.
Other school districts that have recently opposed the ballot initiative include Westminster, Tustin Unified, Huntington Beach City, Huntington Beach Union, Ocean View and Rancho Santiago College.
The Garden Grove Unified School District serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Santa Ana, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Cypress, Stanton and Anaheim.
