The Consumer Product Safety Commission and a manufacturer announced the recall Thursday of 155,000 toddler beds after reviewing 50 cases in which youngsters became trapped in the bed’s metal arches. In one instance, a baby died.

The announcement came four months after the manufacturer, Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., reported that the victim, a 15-month-old, was killed when his head became stuck in a headboard. No other children were injured.

The beds, constructed of tubular steel with arched headboards and footboards, were designed for children ages 2 to 3 who have outgrown their cribs but are not ready for full-sized beds.

One problem lies in the five-inch spaces between the arches, which provide just enough space for children to put their heads through, risking strangulation. Some children also have become stuck between a bottom arch and their mattresses.

“These little kids are exploring, and they don’t know to turn their heads and get back out,” said Jacqueline Jones-Smith, who chairs the safety commission.

The numbers of the models being recalled--10T22 or 10T23--can be found on a label on the bed frame, Cosco officials said. Consumers who already own the beds should call 1-800-468-0174. Replacement parts with narrower openings will be mailed to them.

Until the parts are replaced, the beds should not be used, both the company and the safety commission said.

Cosco first began retrieving the product from its retailers March 15. It had been on the market since December, 1990, and was sold at Toys R Us, Service Merchandise, Sears and Wal-Mart stores for about $50.
