A team of San Diego high school students will compete in an international contest to determine who can most creatively solve scientific puzzles.

Seniors from Samuel Gompers High School will try to prove that they are the best in the world at complex scientific puzzles without words at next month’s worldwide Odessey of the Mind Contest to be held in Boulder, Colo., team captain AnnJoe Golangco Wong-Foy said.

The contest pits teams of students from all over the world against each other to see who can most creatively solve a long- or short-term project without speaking or using their hands, Wong-Foy said. Students instead use body motions and gestures to make a point.

The Gompers team beat out 11 other California schools last Saturday with their skit “How to Turn a Hamburger Back Into a Cow,” Wong-Foy said. The puzzle included a mime play to show how a puzzle can transcend every language by using gestures creatively, he said.
