The Rev. Thomas Yueh Lowe, 82, who as a seminary student in Berkeley in the late 1940s founded the first Chinese Southern Baptist Church in San Francisco at the behest of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. He then began the First Chinese Baptist Church in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Lowe, a Christian convert who graduated from the University of Shanghai in his native China, had journeyed to California to study at the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. But the 1949 Communist takeover prevented his return to China and it was then that the American Baptists asked him to found Chinese Baptist churches in this country. Over the years he established churches and missions in Mexicali, Mexico, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Monterey Park and Long Beach. On March 28 in Santa Ana of heart failure.
