COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nevin Delivers Again as Titans Beat UNLV, 8-1

Phil Nevin had four hits and three runs batted in, Dan Naulty pitched a complete game and Cal State Fullerton defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 8-1, in a Big West Conference game Friday at Amerige Park.

Nevin doubled in his first three at-bats and Chris Powell had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Fullerton offense.

Naulty allowed only four hits, struck out 11 and walked none to earn his eighth victory. Naulty’s only mistake came in the first inning, yielding a home run to Tory Miran, which gave the Rebels (20-13, 5-5 in conference) their only lead.

Fullerton (26-11, 9-4) tied the score in the bottom of the first with two outs after Nevin hit a double and scored on Jason Moler’s single.

Fullerton took control by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second.

Chris Powell drove in Jim Betzsold with a single to break the tie, and Dante Powell’s groundout scored Steve Sisco to give the Titans a 3-1 lead. The rally continued with Nevin’s RBI double to score Chris Powell, and Moler’s RBI single to score Nevin. Moler finished with three hits and two RBIs.

In Big West Conference softball:

CS Fullerton 7-2, San Jose State 0-3--Tiffany Boyd and Cheryl Longeway combined on a four-hit shutout in the first game, but the Titans lost the second game in 10 innings when San Jose State’s Darcy Stapley scored on an error by first baseman Rose Garces.

Boyd (20-5) pitched the first four innings of the first game to earn her 12th consecutive victory. Karin Knoop had two hits and three RBIs in the first game for the Titans (28-13, 10-6), who are ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division I. San Jose State (23-12, 9-7) is ranked No. 16.
