BOXING ROUNDUP : Chavez, Jackson Keep Titles; Rosario Upset

Julio Cesar Chavez retained his World Boxing Council junior welterweight title Friday with a fifth-round knockout of Angel Hernandez of Puerto Rico.

It was the 80th victory without a loss and 69th by knockout for Chavez, 29, of Mexico.

In another title fight, Akinobu Hiranaka of Japan knocked out Puerto Rico’s Edwin Rosario in less than two minutes of the first round to win the World Boxing Assn. junior welterweight title.

Hiranaka immediately rushed Rosario, surprising him with a furious attack that had the champion bouncing from the ropes. Rosario was nearly out on his feet when the fight was stopped.

It was Hiranaka’s 20th victory against one loss and his 13th knockout. Rosario is 37-5.

Earlier, Julian Jackson of the Virgin Islands retained his World Boxing Council middleweight title with a fifth-round knockout of Ron Collins. It was the 42nd knockout for Jackson (44-1). Collins, of LaPorte, Tex., is 21-2.

Jackson had Collins in trouble in the first round and third rounds, then finished him off in the fifth--knocking Collins against the ropes with a right, then scoring with a left and a right that sent Collins to the canvas.

Collins was up at the count of six, but the the fight was stopped.

The fights were held at El Toreo, a covered dome originally built as a bullring.
