A Reynolds Aluminum Can Recycling Machine has been installed at Covina Square, 422 N. Azusa Ave., Covina.

Unlike recycling centers that must be staffed, the machine automatically accepts whole or smashed cans and pays consumers cash on the spot. It operates 24 hours a day. The machine pays 70 cents a pound, with 26 empty cans to the pound.

Other Reynolds machines in the San Gabriel Valley are at Alpha Beta, 3130 S. Colima Ave., Hacienda Heights, and Commerce Center, 20817 Valley Blvd., Walnut.

* Avery Dennison Corp. announced the company’s Monrovia plant has cut back by about a third on smog-forming pollutants being released into the air.

The latest figures submitted to the South Coast Air Quality Management District show that the plant in 1990 released 403 tons of reactive hydrocarbons, down from 603 tons in the previous year. Company officials attributed the drop to the installation of a $1-million pollution control system in 1989.

Charles D. Miller, chairman and chief executive officer, said the reduction is “indicative of our corporate-wide commitment to good environmental citizenship.”

The Monrovia plant, which makes labels and materials for producing labels, had been among the biggest industrial polluters contributing to smog in Los Angeles County. It has been dropping in the rankings, according to AQMD officials.

AQMD spokeswoman Claudia Keith said, “We’re encouraged.” She called the 200-ton drop “a significant amount” in a year in which production remained stable.

The new Saturn location, on Main Street near Marengo, is expected to open in June or July, Sierra Autocars Vice President Peter Hoffman said. Although the company’s Acura dealership, next to the Saturn site, has seen slow sales in recent months, Hoffman said he is optimistic that the Saturn dealership will be successful.

Besides Acura of Alhambra, Sierra Autocars owns Saturn of Monrovia and a Monrovia dealership that sells Chevrolets, Geos, Hondas, Isuzus, Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs.
