Toreros are Swept in Doubleheader

In its quest for second place in the West Coast Conference baseball standings, the University of San Diego ran into Nick Lymberopoulos and Brett Fulton as they pitched St. Mary’s to 4-1 and 3-2 victories Saturday in Moraga.

Lymberopoulos (3-2) pitched a seven-inning three-hitter in the first game, and Fulton (3-2) scattered eight hits in the nine-inning nightcap. Pat Crema (3-4) and Jeff Crane (6-4) took the losses.

John Fenn hit a solo home run in the second game for USD (18-21, 10-11). St. Mary’s is 16-21, 12-9.

UC San Diego split a nonconference doubleheader with Menlo College. The Tritons won the first game, 4-0, then dropped the nightcap, 9-5. UCSD’s Dominic Dirksen, David Blum and David Rex had two hits apiece for UCSD (18-4) in the first game and Ryan Flanagan (6-0) pitched a four-hitter. Ernie Isola was three for three with three RBIs in the second game.

Azusa Pacific won both games of its NAIA doubleheader against host Point Loma Nazarene College, 7-4 and 3-1. PLNC (14-20-1) got a solo home run from Brock Marsh.

INDOOR SOCCER

Socker defender David Banks did not seriously injure his left knee, as the team had feared, in Friday’s Game 2 of the MSL semifinal playoffs against Baltimore. The injury was diagnosed as a strained calf muscle. His status is day-to-day, and he is questionable for Game 3 Tuesday in Baltimore.

However, defender Kevin Crow sprained an ankle in the fourth quarter of the 7-6 loss and he, too, is questionable.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Santa Cruz won the championship of the UC San Diego Triton Classic by defeating the Tritons, 17-15, 15-3, 17-15, in La Jolla. Lamson Lam paced UCSD (3-13) with 15 kills. Mike Nash had 22 kills for the Banana Slugs (20-7).

SOFTBALL

The University of San Diego swept a doubleheader from Santa Clara, 9-1 and 8-3, at USD. Aimee Reinard homered for the Toreras (20-4) in the second game as Hillary Savage (8-2) earned the victory. Tiffany Wasilewski (12-2) had a five-hitter in the early game.

Robin Rabello’s three-run homer gave PLNC (13-13) a split of its doubleheader against La Verne (10-20). PLNC dropped the first game, 7-2, but won the second game, 8-2. Rabello also had a two-run homer in the first game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD, ranked 14th, had little trouble with UC Santa Barbara, winning, 8-1, in the Toreras’ final home match. Julie McKeon, Laura Richards, Tuck Kacharoen, Tracy Ishii and Kara Brady won in straight sets for USD (14-3).

Westmont College, ranked 11th in the NAIA, scored an 8-1 victory over PLNC (13-3). The Crusaders won at No. 3 singles as Kim Wright defeated Kristan Abby, 6-4, 6-4.

MEN’S TENNIS

Fresno State scored a 5-4 victory over USD. Fredrik Axeter, Kevin Bradley, Ignacio Martinez and Phil Hofmann swept the top four singles for USD (12-8), but the Bulldogs (13-8) swept in doubles.

John Norton didn’t lose a game, and Enrique Guajardo lost only one as PLNC (15-2) scored a 9-0 victory over Westmont.
