Julio Cesar Chavez’s 80th career victory was barely in the books when he began talking about his next opponent.

“I hope Macho stops running away from me now,” Chavez said.

It was the 69th career knockout for Chavez, 29, of Mexico. It was Hernandez’ first loss against 36 victories.

In another title fight, Akinobu Hiranaka of Japan demolished Puerto Rico’s Edwin Rosario in less than two minutes of the first round to win the World Boxing Association junior welterweight title.

Julian Jackson of the Virgin Islands also retained his WBC middleweight title with a fifth-round knockout of American Ron Collins.

Chavez had problems in the early rounds when Hernandez, taller and with a longer reach, tried to tie him up several times.

“He tried to frustrate me,” Chavez said. “but I knew I had to be patient and wear him down.”

Referee Arthur Mercante stopped the fight after 1 minute and 11 seconds of the fifth round when the Mexican had Hernandez against the ropes and was hitting him at will.

Hernandez started the fight using his speed to stay away from the champion, but Chavez moved inside and hit gradually slowed the Puerto Rican with blows to the belly.

In the previous fight, Hiranaka catapulted out of his corner at the sound of the bell and rushed Rosario, surprising him with a furious attack that had the champion bouncing from the ropes.

Hiranaka’s relentless attack had Rosario practically out on his feet before the referee stopped the fight.

It was Hiranaka’s 20th victory against one loss and his 13th knockout. Rosario is 37-5.

Jackson (44-1) scored his 42nd knockout in defeating Collins, of LaPorte, Texas. Collins is now 21-2.

Jackson had Collins in difficulty in the first round when he scored with a solid right, but the Texan held on and at times traded punches with the heavy hitter from the Virgin Islands.

Jackson shook Collins in the third round and then finished him off in the fifth, knocking Collins against the ropes with a right, then scoring with a left and a right that sent Collins to the canvas.
