A sailor visiting from the Greek navy drowned, and a colleague was injured Monday after their car veered off a road and into San Diego Bay, U.S. Navy officials said.

The two sailors, whose identities had not been released late Monday, were driving from the 32nd Street Naval Station when their car crashed into the bay near the station’s southern point, U.S. Navy spokeswoman Kathy Cook said.

The injured sailor, who ran for help, was taken to the San Diego Naval Hospital for treatment.

Navy divers pulled the other sailor from the bay half an hour later, Cook said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sailors were being trained on U.S. Navy ships that are being decommissioned and turned over to the Panhellenic Navy, Cook said.
