SANTA PAULA : Park Is Site of 1st Frontier Days Event
Santa Paula’s first Frontier Days carnival started Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park on South 10th Street.
Sponsored by the Mexican American Chamber of Commerce, the carnival will offer amusement rides, games and food today through Sunday.
The chamber will get 15% of the ride ticket revenues, which organizers said they hope will amount to $3,000 to $5,000. The money will go into the chamber’s college scholarship fund.
Each year, the chamber awards $350 scholarships to 10 promising Santa Paula High School students.
“We target the kids who will succeed whether we help them or not, to give them recognition,” said carnival organizer Jim Tovias.
The chamber hopes that the carnival will be successful enough to become an annual event that would be open next year to nonprofit groups to raise funds for their organizations, Tovias said.
The carnival was originally scheduled for February then March, but was postponed both times because of equipment problems and bad weather, he said.
