OJAI : Landslide Closes Highway 33 Section

A 10-mile stretch of Highway 33 north of Ojai will be closed through the end of the month while crews clear the roadway of debris from a recent landslide.

Campers headed to campgrounds north of Lockwood Valley will be out of luck through the Easter weekend, Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli said.

“We’re not letting anyone at this time go through,” Tiritilli said.

California Department of Transportation officials are directing Ojai motorists bound for Bakersfield onto Route 126 through Santa Paula and Route 150 to Santa Maria, Tiritilli said. An estimated 530 cars go through the area each day, she said.

Workers clearing the road of debris from recent rainstorms triggered a mudslide last week. About 300,000 cubic yards of dirt and rocks will need to be cleared off the road between Pine Mountain and Ozena, Tiritilli said.

A crew of about 24 people is working seven days a week on the project. The road is expected to reopen by early May.
