Celebrities lend their voices and storytelling skills to Showtime series

“A veritable treasure trove” of children’s literature is how the folks at Showtime describe their animated series, “Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories,” which premieres Tuesday with new episodes weekly through May 26. Featuring adaptations of popular kids’ tales, the shows are narrated by various celebrities and hosted by Duvall, who made a name for herself in kids’ TV with the award-winning Showtime series “Fairie Tale Theatre” in 1982.

Each episode of “Bedtime Stories” pairs two loosely related tales, beginning with “Elbert’s Bad Word,” narrated by Ringo Starr, and “Weird Parents,” narrated by Bette Midler. In the first story, a little boy nearly ruins his mother’s garden party until he learns to control his temper. The second story concerns another boy whose folks are extremely strange.

“Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories,” Tuesday 7:30-8 p.m. Showtime. For 2- to 6-year-olds.

Just for this week, Nick Arcade in the O-Zone (Monday-Friday 7-7:30 p.m. Nickelodeon) puts “Nick Arcade,” the weekend video game show, in a weeknight slot. For 8- to 15-year-olds.

Entertainers, writers, comedians and teachers take an irreverent look at school in Listen Up! Voices in Celebration of Education (Monday 8-9 p.m. KOCE). For ages 13 and up.

It’s rock ‘n’ roll night on Fox, beginning with Spinal Tap guest-voicing on an episode of The Simpsons (Thursday 8-8:30 p.m.), then the premiere of Michael Jackson’s In the Closet music video (8:25-9 p.m.) and concluding with Color Me Badd’s acting debut on Beverly Hills, 90210. For ages 12 and up.

Mehli Mehta and the American Youth Symphony (Thursday 10-11 p.m. KCET) is a documentary about the 83-year-old maestro and his 16- to 25-year-old proteges. For ages 10 ad up.

Peter Jennings hosts Prejudice: Answering Children’s Questions (Saturday 10:30 a.m.-noon ABC. For 8- to 14-year-olds. ) Based on a story by Roald Dahl, The Big Friendly Giant (Saturday 7-9 p.m. Disney Channel) is the animated tale of an orphan and her very large friend. For 6- to 11-year-olds.

An absent-minded professor makes a major error in the 1989 Disney comedy Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (Saturday 8-10 p.m. CBS), starring Rick Moranis and a giant ant. For all ages.
