It’s going to be a busy weekend at The Exchange. There will be a National Fine Arts Competition, a local artists show, a crafts show, a display of art by students in the Glendale Unified School District, entertainment, a champagne race, a 5-K/10-K run and fun walk.

The fourth annual Kaleidoscope ‘92, an arts festival sponsored by the Glendale Regional Arts Council, will run from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday along the block of Maryland Avenue between Broadway and Wilson Avenue.

Work by local artists will be displayed on the center divider on Maryland, facing the businesses on the east side of the street, which will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday. The west (southbound) side will remain open to allow access to the Glendale Urban Garage. Information booths will be located under the archway facing Brand Boulevard and next to the parking garage entrance on Maryland.

Musical groups that will perform in The Exchange courtyard include the Showbiz Kids, singers ages 6 to 18 from the Foothill Academy of Performing Arts; guitarist Sarah Bukacek, playing songs of Brazil; the Verdugo Swing Society, and jazz vocalist and flutist Emily Hay.

Competition artwork will be shown at the Kaleidoscope Showcase Gallery, 138 N. Brand Blvd., in The Exchange. There will be an artists’ reception from 5 to 7:30 tonight at the gallery, featuring hors d’oeuvres and presentation of awards. Admission is $15. The gallery will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The art will remain on display at the gallery for four weeks.

The Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center is sponsoring the Festival 5-K/10-K run and 5-K walk on Sunday. Participants may check in beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Allstate Plaza, Brand Boulevard and Monterey Drive. The 5-K run and walk begin at Verdugo Park at 7:30 a.m., and the 10-K run is at 7:50 a.m. Free bus transportation will be provided to the starting line, and the runners and walkers will finish at Allstate Plaza. The entry fee is $15 and includes a T-shirt.

Admission to the festival is free.

Oh, and what is a champagne race? Waiters from The Exchange restaurants will run a marked course, each carrying a single glass filled with champagne on a tray.
