A record seizure of anabolic steroids in the Northeast was announced Wednesday by drug officials in Newark, N.J., who said young athletes were being lured into buying the drugs with promises of enhanced performance.
The cache has an estimated street value of $1.2 million, and is the first major bust in the Northeast since steroids became a federally controlled substance in 1991, said Thomas Sheehan, acting special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s New Jersey office.
