IRVINE : District OKs Site for New Middle School

Share

The Irvine Unified School District has approved the location for a new middle school just outside the city’s Northwood community to serve those residents as well as residents of the proposed 2,885-home Northwood 5 community.

Board member Tom Burnham voted against establishing the site for the proposed North Irvine Middle School until further noise studies could be conducted. Burnham said he was concerned that aircraft noise levels from the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station come too close to state noise limits for middle schools.

Deputy Supt. Paul H. Reed countered that noise at the site would be no louder than the noise at any other school in the Northwood community.

The 20-acre site is about one mile north of Irvine Boulevard between Yale Avenue and the proposed extension of Jeffrey Road. The land is just outside current Irvine city limits in unincorporated county territory.

The school will cost about $20 million to build and will serve 750 middle school students.
