Mattel’s New Birthing Doll Lays an Egg

Share

After reading Robin Abcarian’s “Mother of All Surprises Is Birthing in Toyland” (April 9) regarding the Mattel toy that simulates pregnancy and birthing, I have not been able to get it out of my mind.

First, creating a new life is a serious, lifelong commitment that should be undertaken only after a great deal of thought. It does not fall into the realm of fun and games. With the teen-age birth rate at an all time high, we should not be encouraging little girls to be preoccupied with pregnancy and birthing.

In addition, with the increased rate of spousal abuse and divorce, girls should be motivated and given every opportunity to grow and develop into independent, self-sufficient persons before even considering bringing another human being into existence. They may well become the sole supporters of their families.

There are many good educational games and toys on the market today that will help children in the learning process so that they can better succeed in life. I hope that parents will think seriously about the message that toys are giving their children before purchasing them.
