CAMARILLO : City to Renovate Sheriff’s Station

Camarillo City Council members have decided to spend $60,000 to repair the aging Ventura County sheriff’s station on Palm Drive rather than move the department into a leased building and make costly improvements.

The $60,000 will pay for a new roof and carpeting and an improved parking lot for the building, which was built in 1956 and houses 55 employees. Camarillo contracts with the Sheriff’s Department, so deputies patrolling the city must share the station with deputies who patrol the outlying county areas.

City Manager William Little said Cmdr. Ray Abbott recommended that the council wait to move the sheriff’s operation into a new station in a few years rather than make the interim move.

Little has estimated the cost to lease a new building at $4,800 to $13,000 a month, not including improvements.

Pardee Construction has promised the city a four-acre parcel near Pitts Ranch for a new sheriff’s station, but it won’t transfer the deed until 1993, when the company begins construction on a nearby project.

The cost to build a new station of 20,000 to 22,000 square feet is estimated at $5 million to $6 million, Little said.
