OXNARD : Bus Route Cuts to Provide Road Funds

Share

The Southern California Transit System’s bus route connecting Oxnard’s beaches to the Centerpoint Mall will be eliminated to save money for road repairs, Oxnard’s Council decided Tuesday.

The council voted 3 to 2 to eliminate the route, for a yearly savings of $82,000, despite petitions signed by nearly 100 residents asking the bus route be saved.

Mayor Nao Takasugi and Councilman Manuel Lopez voted to preserve it.

The other three council members voted to end service because it was only recovering 10% through bus tickets. By law, state transportation funds must be used to subsidize bus routes unless fares pay for less than 20% of the cost of operating the route. Once bus fares drop below the 20% threshold, city officials can use those funds for road repairs.
