SANTA CLARITA : Tree to Circulate as Holocaust Memorial

Share

A potted tree has started a yearlong journey among religious congregations in Santa Clarita as a symbol commemorating the deaths of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust and the need for mutual tolerance.

In a ceremony Tuesday at Temple Beth Shalom in Newhall, Santa Clarita Valley Interfaith Council leaders gave the tree to Rabbi Ron Hauss. Next month, the tree will go to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. It will circulate among the council’s 12 congregations, which include Protestant, Mormon, Seventh-day Adventist, Jewish and Bahai affiliates.

In addition, Mayor Jill Klajic presented to the interfaith council a city proclamation designating Thursday as a day of memory for those who perished in the Holocaust and commending the teaching of tolerance to prevent it from happening again.
