The county coroner’s office Wednesday identified a man who was fatally struck here by a passenger train headed for Los Angeles.

Authorities said Anthony David Halsted, 34, was killed instantly on the tracks near Culver Drive about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Coroner’s officials said it appears that Halsted was a transient. They are trying to contact anyone who may have known him.

Police, Amtrak officials and coroner’s deputies are investigating the case as a suspicious death.

“Maybe the guy was playing chicken,” Irvine Police Sgt. Gary Shull said. “It could be he was mentally unstable, or maybe he committed suicide. It’s a mystery to us too.”

Halsted was described as white, 5 feet, 7 inches and about 180 pounds, with long, kinky brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a jeans jacket, dark sweat shorts and white sneakers.

Deputy Coroner Maureen Albrecht asked anyone who may have known Halsted to call (714) 647-7400.
