A Summer Without Satire: “Doonesbury” fans are in for a long summer. Artist Garry Trudeau, who creates the comic strip, is taking a vacation because he “wants some time away from the drawing board.” Universal Press Syndicate, the strip’s distributor, will supply its 1,400 subscribers with reruns while Trudeau is away June 1 through Sept. 5. It’s not Trudeau’s first leave of absence. He took time off in 1983 and 1984 to update his characters and work on other projects. “Doonesbury” began in 1970.
