Countywide : 300 Students Learn Earth Day Lessons
What are kids studying in school these days?
About 300 Ventura County schoolchildren learned how to let worms eat their garbage and how to be environmentally correct when loading the shopping cart at the market.
The children boned up on these unconventional subjects Friday during a field trip to Earth Day celebrations at Thousand Oaks Community Park, said John Pratt, salesman for a Simi Valley sportswear company who was hawking Earth Day shirts at the event.
“The kids learned a lot today,” Pratt said. “If they can go home and kick their parents in the butt, maybe we’ve got something.”
Few adults attended Friday’s celebration, probably because they had to work, Pratt said. Officials are hoping today’s events at Thousand Oaks Community Park and Sunday’s celebration at Channel Islands National Park at Ventura Harbor will draw children and adults alike.
More than 150 booths and exhibits will be on display, and speakers will also give presentations on water-saving irrigation methods and safe substitutes for household hazardous wastes.
Events today in Thousand Oaks will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday’s events are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
