KING CASE AFTERMATH: A CITY IN CRISIS : The Polls

The overwhelming majority of blacks interviewed in two polls say the verdict in the Rodney King case shows that blacks don’t receive fair treatment in the U.S. judicial system: A USA Today poll found:

81% of blacks and 36% of whites believe the justice system is biased against blacks.

100% of blacks and 86% of whites felt the verdicts were wrong.

61% of blacks and 47% of whites said rioting in Los Angeles was wrong but understandable. An ABC News-Washington Post poll found:

78% of blacks felt the King verdict “shows that blacks cannot get justice in this country.”

25% of whites agreed with that statement.

52% of blacks believe the rioting will make whites less sympathetic to the problems of blacks.

97% of blacks and 63% of whites thought the Justice Department should charge the police officers with violating King’s civil rights.
