*** 1/2 Eastern Rebellion, “Mosaic,” Musicmasters. This is the latest in a series of off-again, on-again groups that pianist Cedar Walton has dubbed with the Rebellion banner. Here he augments his regular trio mates--David Williams, bass; Billy Higgins, drums--with the vital young tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore, who fits in perfectly. Walton’s title track finds him in a jaunty move, and “My Old Flame” oozes with warmth. “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” is given an uncharacteristic medium-up treatment.
New albums are rated on a scale of one asterisk (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five asterisks is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
