Fares Discontinued

In answer to a question about whether airlines offered senior citizen discounts (Questions and Answers, April 19), Eric Friedheim said: “All major airlines offer senior discounts, usually 10% for persons 62 and over, as well as for companions of any age.” According to my subsequent conversation with an American Airlines representative, this is not true. They do not offer any discount at all to senior citizens, much less their companions.

Eric Friedheim responds: “On April 13, American discontinued domestic senior citizen fares. However, they still are in effect on American’s flights to Latin America (except Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) and Europe (except Sweden). The discount is still 10%, and also for a companion.” For an update on senior discounts for air travel, see today’s The Mature Traveler column on page L21.
