Del Mar Track Racing Ahead With Improvements

Share

The $80-million renovation of the Del Mar Race Track grandstands is heading up the far stretch.

The Del Mar track is undergoing a three-year face lift and expansion, which, upon completion in June, 1994, will enlarge grandstand seating from 9,600 to 15,000 and spectator capacity from 25,000 to 50,000 fans.

The first phase of the three-year remodeling job on the western half of the stands will be done by the opening of the Del Mar Fair on June 17. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s 1992 race season runs from July 29 through Sept. 16.

As soon as the 1992 race meet is finished, the second phase of construction on the eastern section of the grandstands will begin. At the end of the 1993 racing season, landscaping will be improved and fountains built, all to be completed in June, 1994. General contractor is M. H. Golden of San Diego.

The doubling of the spectator capacity of the grandstands is sure to have a significant economic effect. Racing fans pump millions of dollars into the local economy in hotel, restaurant and entertainment receipts. The track employs about 3,000 during the race season.
