LEGAL ADVICE HOT LINE

(213) 731-7285. Volunteer attorneys sponsored by the Holman United Methodist Church are answering questions and offering free counsel to familes affected by the riots from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

(800) 873-2863. A group of volunteer professionals in conjunction with the California State Victims of Crime Program will screen and refer crime victims of the riots suffering from anxiety, depression, insomnia, nightmare, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorders and anxiety and panic attacks to mental health care centers. Call and ask for “Victim Counseling.”

TAXI RIDES

(213) 627-7000. L.A. Taxi is offering subsidized rides for the next several days from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to grocery stores for residents in the Crenshaw, South Los Angeles and other hard-hit areas of the city. Riders will be charged $1 each way per person, with up to three shoppers sharing a cab, said Robert LeVels, who heads the effort. Call and request Operation Food Basket.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES ASSISTANCE

(800) 300-CITY. Councilwoman Rita Walters has established this South Los Angeles hot line for those who need general information and assistance in her district.

COMPTON HOT LINE

(310) 605-5543. City officials will take requests for additional security and provide information on food and health care services and rebuilding loans from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

PROPERTY DAMAGE HOT LINE

(800) 870-1929. Operated by the Los Angeles Office of Emergency Management, this voice-mail line will help officials determine if the damage your home or business suffered will qualify for federal assistance, if it becomes available.

Be prepared to leave your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of the type of property damage.

RED CROSS AID

(213) 739-4543. Those who need general information or victims needing assistance can call the American Red Cross at this number. Two Red Cross shelters remain open for families and individuals whose homes or apartments have been destroyed by fire:

HELP FOR PETS

(800) 585-SPCA. The Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is distributing free canned and dry pet food and providing free veterinary medical care.
