ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST : Drinking Water Is Contaminated

Share

Drinking water in several areas of the Angeles National Forest has tested positive for cryptosporidium, an organism that causes nausea, cramps and diarrhea, U. S. Forest Service officials have announced.

A forest official said contaminated water taps have been shut off. Those planning a picnic or day trip through the forest are asked to carry drinking water with them. Others planning on extended stays may contact their local ranger district or the forest information desk at (818) 574-5200 to learn where safe water supplies are available.

Officials said the symptoms caused by cryptosporidium are similar to those caused by giardia. The disease is not life-threatening for those with healthy immune systems, but can be dangerous to people with AIDS, officials said.
