The Metropolitan Homicide Task Force on Tuesday announced the arrest of a Wisconsin man wanted for attempted murder in a 1986 attack on an Oceanside prostitute.

Task force detectives arrested Wayne Robert Amundson on Monday in La Crosse, Wis. Officials said the 32-year-old unemployed man is also being investigated for possibly being involved in other assaults in San Diego County.

Amundson, who is being held in lieu of $2.5 million in the La Crosse County Jail, is fighting extradition. Prosecutors here have filed extradition documents with Wisconsin officials.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Cook would not reveal the name of the victim involved in the December, 1986, attack. “We can’t release that,” he said, noting that a sexual assault was also involved.

The multi-agency task force has investigated a series of prostitute-related murders and attacks, most of which occurred in the East County during the mid- to late 1980s. The task force has investigated 45 cases and has recorded seven convictions so far, according to Cook.
